The Vampire Diaries is an American supernatural television series that is based on the book series written by L. J. Smith. The series premiered in 2006, and averaged about 3.60 million viewers.

The show originally received average reviews, but the critics agreed that the series improved over the course of the first season. The television series has won several award nominations, a People’s Choice Award, and many Teen Choice Awards.

The TV series is about a 17-year old girl- Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev)- who falls in love with a 162-year-old vampire- Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley). Elana must stay safe when Stefan’s malevolent older brother- Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder)- comes to town and begins wreaking havoc. Elana is drawn to Damon, creating a love triangle.

The entire town is charged with supernatural beings. The TV series is known for the chemistry between its characters and the overall sci-fi fantasy behind the plots.
