Lampir is the given name for the vampire of Bosnia. It was similar to the vampires along the Slavs, and was interchangeable with the term ‘vukodlak,’ used in Croatia.
The main cause of designating a person to be a Lampir was disease. When a disease swept through a community, and the cause of the disease was unknown, it was often ascribed to vampirism. The first person to die usually was designated as the vampire and others who died were the victims of the vampire. The victims, however, were also thought to have been infested with the vampire’s condition and were able to pass it on.
